Solution Mining

Non-invasive ultrasonic clamp-on flow measurement and process analysis for solution mining using FLEXIM's flow meters

In recent years FLEXIM meters have found a perfect use in 'solution mining' applications.

Solution mining extracts valuable components from a mineral deposit using an aqueous leaching solvent which is injected into the deposit through a borehole.

The solvent can be water, which forms brine as the soluble minerals dissolve. The brine is brought to the surface for further processing. FLEXIM clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters measure the injected water flow and the produced brine flow bi directionally.

By measuring fluid sound velocity the same meter also provides information about the brine density - allowing the operators to calculate the dissolved cavern volume. The meters can be used on high pressure pipes and the same set of transducers can be used on a wide range of pipe sizes.

Benefits:

  • Non-invasive high accuracy flow- and brine concentration / density measurement with one instrument
  • Independent of high pressure of the fluid (brine)
  • Not subject to wear and tear - instruments may be used many times and are not subject to corrosion through salt.
  • Not affected by solid particles (i.e. sand and stones in the brine)
  • Maximum flexibility for further modifications of the plant: One pair of transducers covers a wide diameter range, e.g. 2" (DN50) to 12" (DN300) or 8" (DN200) to 32" (DN800)
  • No leakage risks
  • Installation without need to stop the process
